2022 VACANCIES ON CITY BOARDS, COMMISSIONS AND COMMITTEES - ANNUAL RECRUITMENT

City Council and Appointed Boards, Commissions, and Committees List (PDF)

The Mill Valley City Council is seeking applicants to serve, contribute and to utilize the top talent that exists among the residents of the community for the City’s various Boards, Commissions and Committees.[1] New terms begin March 1st for a three-year period (unless noted otherwise). Members may serve no more than two consecutive terms. These appointments are made by the City Council and serve without financial compensation.

ARTS COMMISSION – One member’s term is expiring, and the incumbent is not eligible to reapply. The Commission arranges exhibits at City Hall and the Community Center, sponsors concerts in the Plaza as well as the annual ‘Click Off’ Photography Event. This is a hands-on working group that coordinates special artistic events along with its monthly “First Tuesday Art Walk.” The Commission needs task-oriented, focused members committed to community outreach. Meetings are the second Tuesday evening of each month. Please note the opening is available to an individual who lives outside of City limits but within the Mill Valley School District.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE – Two members’ terms are expiring and of those, one incumbent is eligible to reapply. The purpose of this Committee is to help with the development and implementation of the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan and to review and comment on the design of Capital Improvement Projects as they relate to bicycling and walking. Meetings are held approximately quarterly. Please note that four of the five members shall be city of Mill Valley residents and the fifth member may be a resident in the unincorporated area of Mill Valley. One of the two openings is available to an individual who is a resident of the unincorporated area of Mill Valley.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COMMISSION – Three members’ terms are expiring, and all three incumbents are eligible to reapply. There is also one current unscheduled vacant seat on the Commission and this seat’s term will run from the date of appointment to February 28, 2023, at which time the chosen applicant will be able to reapply for a new three-year term. The Commission advocates the need for ongoing emergency preparedness and helps identify, organize and liaison with neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. They assist with educating residents on ways to be self-sufficient in a disaster and encourage CERT training. Meetings are the second Thursday of every month at City Hall. Please note one of the openings is available to an individual who lives outside of City limits but within the Mill Valley School District.

LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES One member’s term is expiring, and the incumbent is eligible to reapply. This advisory board meets on the second Thursday evening of every month. Trustees advise the City Librarian on matters related to the Library, advocate for the Library, and make reports to City Council. Please note the opening is only available to an individual who lives within City limits.

 MARIN COUNTY COMMISSION ON AGING - No current vacancies.

 MARIN/SONOMA MOSQUITO AND VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT – No current vacancies.

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION - Three members’ terms are expiring, of which, one member is eligible to reapply. This five-member Commission meets on the first Wednesday evening of each month at City Hall to review issues pertaining to City parks, recreation facilities, and equipment. The Commission also studies the City’s tree planting and replacement program. Please note one of the openings is available to an individual who lives outside of City limits but within the Mill Valley School District.

PLANNING COMMISSION – One member’s term is expiring, and the incumbent is eligible to reapply. There is also one current unscheduled vacant seat on the Commission and this seat’s term will run from the date of appointment to February 28, 2023, at which time the chosen applicant will be able to apply for a second three-year term. Pursuant to the Mill Valley Municipal Code, the Commission shall consist of five residents of the City of Mill Valley appointed by the City Council. To include persons with design expertise on the Commission, at least two members of the Commission shall be licensed architects, architects-in-training, licensed landscape architects, landscape architects-in-training, or urban planners. Candidates for both vacant seats must be a licensed architect, architect-in-training, licensed landscape architect, landscape architect-in-training, or urban planner (per regulations outlined in Mill Valley Municipal Code Section 72 2.08.140[a]). The Commission acts on design review and land use entitlement requests and develops ordinances to implement the General Plan. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Please note the opening is only available to an individual who lives within City limits.

PLEASE NOTE, interviews may be held before the City Council’s January 20th, February 7th, and/or February 22nd, 2022, meetings (final schedule to be determined). Applicants will be contacted after the January 10th deadline to finalize interview details.

[1] The City Council may be considering potential changes to some of the residency requirements for the City’s Boards, Commissions and Committees on January 20, 2022, which could result in an extension of the application period for some or all of the openings. 

[2] Please be aware that some of these positions require the applicant to live within the bounds of Mill Valley City limits. Specific guidelines for residency are noted in the descriptions of each Board, Commission, and Committee.
